....that the Greyhound is the only BREED of Dog mentioned, by name, in the Bible? (Proverbs 30,verses
29-31)
....that the first time that a Dog was mentioned in literature, it was a Greyhound. ("The Odyssey"-Homer)
....that the first Breed of Dog mentioned in English literature is a Greyhound. ("The Canterbury Tales"-Chaucer)
....that the Greyhound was the first distinct Breed of Dog depicted in Art.
....that the Greyhound is among the oldest known Breed of Dogs.
....that in ancient Egypt, the Greyhound was only owned by royalty and was held with such high regard
within the family, that a birth/death of a Greyhound
was virtually equal to the birth/death of a son. After death, the Dogs were even mummified and buried in the family "tombs".
....that in the summer night sky, the constellation,
Bootes,(the Hunter/Herdsman), has two Dogs with him on his nightly hunting excursion, named Asterion and
Chara. They are known as the Canes Venatici and are
both, Greyhounds.
....that King Tut, Ponce de Leon,Alexander the Great,
King Henry VIII, Queen Victoria, General George Custer, Rutherford B. Hayes, Sir Walter Scott, and
John Tyler were all Greyhound owners.
....that Greyhounds can reach speeds of up to 45 mph, and that, when running at full stride, are in the air 75 percent of the time.
....that the Greyhound belongs to a family of Dogs known as Sighthounds, meaning that they rely on their keen sense of sight, rather than scent for "tracking" their prey. Salukis, Borzois, Rhodesian Ridgebacks, and Irish Wolfhounds are some of the other members of this family.
....that Greyhounds are used as blood donors for veterinary hospitals, etc. because due to their low body fat, their veins are more easily accessible, and because their blood type is considered to be universal,(although this fact is not necessarily true.).
....that Greyhounds come in a variety of colors, including:black, white, fawn, red, different shades of brindle, and cream. The actual GRAY Greyhound is called blue, and is somewhat rare, as is the blue
brindle.
....that the average life expectancy of a Greyhound is between 12 and 14 years. Most "retired" racers are still very young,(2-3 yrs. of age.).
....THAT, ON THE AVERAGE, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT GREYHOUNDS ARE DESTROYED ANNUALLY, IN NUMBERS REACHING INTO THE TENS-OF-THOUSANDS,..NEEDLESSLY.....
The reported atrocities of the Greyhound Racing Industry is not the "reason" for this factsheet, the survival of this wonderful breed of Dog is. By now, most of the public at large is somewhat aware of the controversies surrounding Dog Racing,(i.e. cruel
living environments, the brutal, inhumane forms of death used to filter out the no-longer-profitable "commodities", overbreeding, etc.),and those who commit such acts should be punished, yet,in NO way should these publicized controversies be considered a "norm" blanketing the ENTIRE industry. It is also, our belief, that change does not come about by continuously focusing on the "negatives",however true or false they may be and that by cooperation and understanding we can all reach a "means to an end". The Greyhound Adoption movement is a way of hopefully changing the plight of this graceful animal.
We at The Nusserpaper Chronicles strongly support and applaued all of the various GH adoption groups worldwide, and their efforts.
